Projects
- Youth Music provides project funding for initiatives supporting children and young people aged 0-25 experiencing challenging circumstances
- Youth Music have also compiled a very useful and extensive list of other organisations which fund and support music projects – you can download the list here
- Developing your creative practice (Arts Council) – The fund supports creative practitioners thinking of taking their practice to the next stage to research, have time to create new work, travel, training, develop ideas, network or find mentoring.
- Wiltshire Community Foundation offers a range of small and large grants for groups and individuals.The Foundation particularly awards grants to projects taking place in communities with limited financial capacity and benefiting people who cannot afford to cover the costs themselves.
- Arts Council England runs the National Lottery Project Fund grant, and has open programmes for both music and musicians and children, and young people and learning
- Wiltshire Council Area Boards offer funding for community projects and have a category for positive activity for young people aged 13-19 (and up to 25 for young adults with SEND) Projects supported in the past have included music activity.
- Blue Spark Foundation is a registered charity which supports education and development of children and people by providing grants, including for music projects
- D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust funds promotion of access, education, excellence, and diversity in the arts with emphasis on choral singing for children and young people to encourage recruitment into choirs, but also to engage and inspire, young people on the fringes of society through music and drama projects to improve their employability and diminish the risk of social exclusion
- Michael Tippet Musical Foundation supports the development of group music making especially involving young people, with composing central to the project.
- The Radcliffe Trust supports classical music performance and training, especially chamber music, composition and music education. Particular interests within music education are music for children and adults with special needs, youth orchestras and projects at secondary and higher levels, including academic research
- The Wingate Foundation considers applications for support in those areas of music performance and education which do not readily attract backing from commercial sponsors or other funding bodies, or which are not eligible for public funding. Priority will be given to opportunities for young professionals and to education projects for young people
Tuition and progression
- We have partnered with Wiltshire Rural Music on a Young Person’s Bursary to which parents/carers can apply with endorsement from a tutor. Details of which can be found here
- Awards for Young Musicians and EMI Music Sound Foundation are national charities which give grants to children from low income families, who are learning at a higher level.
- Local charities offer grants for individuals’ education which often includes musical learning. Schools and Town and Parish Councils are good places to find out about local charities in your area.
- Countess of Munster Musical Trust Supports young musicians in their final years of study
- The Wrightson Trust Supports young musicians in need age 11-18
- Future Talent Scholarships and awards for talented young musicians
- Childrens Chance provides funding for recreational, cultural or educational activity for disadvantaged children aged 4-18 who live, or go to school within a 30 mile radius of Salisbury.
- The Rose Gale Trust provides grants for young people aged 13-25 suffering financial hardship to help them advance their education, life, and skills. The trust was set up to honour the memory of Rose Gale, a highly respected Wiltshire Youth Worker who co-founded Bass Connection youth music project in Salisbury.
Instruments and Equipment
- Take it away – a scheme that aims to make musical instruments more accessible to children and young people by providing interest-free loans of up to £5,000.
- OHMI provides a range of adapted instruments and enabling apparatus, available to hire through the OHMI Trust for an annual fee. This enables those with a physical disability to make music without the heightened expense of buying an adapted instrument.
- Universal Music Sound Foundation Offers Funding for Schools to Purchase Musical Equipment.
- Assisted Instrument Purchase Scheme (AIPS) is no longer available through Wiltshire Council, but may be accessed through local authority schools if they’re willing to do the paperwork. We do not have a list of nominated shops but have found Music Room (Salisbury) to be supportive of Wiltshire Music Connect and what we seek to achieve.
- Benslow Instrument Loan Scheme is an UK charity that hires high quality instruments to talented young musicians.
- Cherubim Music Trust loans professional calibre instruments to students (aged 15+) who intend to enter music college.
- The ‘Felicity Belfield Music Trust‘ was formed in 1990 by Felicity Belfield to provide orchestral instruments for learners.
