What is Songwriter?
It is a composing & songwriting community for young people aged 8-18 who live or go to school in Wiltshire and provides safe opportunities for them to share recordings of their work and get support.
As part of our Take Note youth consultation young people in Wiltshire told us they’d like to have more chances to share ideas and music as well as to branch out and try new things. So whether they are creating rap, classical or film music or whether they’ve recorded on a phone or a million pound studio, Songwriter is an opportunity to share their material safely with others, to get constructive advice and tips and to win prizes. Young people or their parent / carer can register and upload recordings.
As we launch Songwriter this summer/autumn we are focussing on encouraging secondary school students to upload and share their work.
You can download a flyer for students / young people here:
Please have a look at the Songwriter website and encourage young people to upload their own work and let’s see the Wiltshire “chart” grow!
We aim to offer regular competitions and prizes as well as tips on how to record songs and compositions and different approaches to composing music, and writing songs and lyrics. Have a look at our first competition – details on this page.

The IPO (Intellectual Property Office) has a great website aimed at teachers and young people called Cracking Ideas with resources for learning about copyright. There’s also a free app-based game called MUSIC INC aimed at 14-18 year olds interested in music which allows gamers to guide aspiring artists through the challenges and opportunities of a successful music career in the 21st century. The game highlights some of the challenges the modern music industry faces as well as providing education on the wider issues of copyright and the affect it has on the music trade, and teaches skills like managing budgets and making investment decisions.
The game has been designed to educate young audiences on specific challenges thrown up by the digital market and copyright infringement.
Note: The Songwriter platform is safe – children and young people cannot communicate directly with each other via the platform, and all compositions and comments are moderated. Full details about safeguarding and GDPR (data protection) are published on the Songwriter website – which is produced by music education hubs and is a non-profit making venture used by music hubs as part of their music education strategies.
