What schools have taken from the WSI programme

LACOCK– Head Teacher Richard Hearn knew that music needed to be developed within the school and it was a priority in their SIP. The school now has plans to ensure that Music will be available for all classes and the school will be meeting the curriculum more effectively. Staff skills and confidence with musical activities will be increased in realistic ways. They will also start First Access music and a regular school / parent / staff choir.

HORNINGSHAM – already musically strong and planning to move to the next stage of ArtsMark, the school is now thinking about a wider role for music and their creative approach to teaching. They anticipate both greater depth and a broader range of activities –  integrating aspects of music into other subject areas and increasing staff confidence in musical activities in realistic ways.

MANORFIELDS – are building on their strong musical programme. Starting by using some of the Wiltshire Music Connect CPD offer they’re branching out into Wellbeing and Mindfulness. Music will appear within Maths and Science work and will also be supporting small groups and ensembles appropriate to their pupils’ interests & abilities.

SHALBOURNE
C of E are to extend their
use of music and musical activities as part of a wider strategy around improving behaviour in school.

WHITEPARISH ALL SAINTS are to explore ways to use song lyrics within guided reading sessions thereby contributing to literacy targets. Incoming CPD from specialists will develop ideas with staff for composition related work.

ROWDE ACADEMY – whilst not within their SIP, music provision was being re-thought following a change in staff and drop-in activities. They now see children very much as leading the direction of music. Some future interventions will be targeted at specific groups of pupils and they hope to see pupils really valuing their musical opportunities – a real sense of pride and achievement in turn reflected in behaviour and wider attainment.

All schools are developing ways to measure how successful these developments are and in some cases will be seeking pupils’ responses within that process. All anticipate needing to (continue) use specialists who can, alongside their work with pupils, leave skills and ideas or effective practice with school staff.
