Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)
Teaching music and leading music activity with children and young people is a regulated activity. This means some people are barred from doing it.
Everyone who works for Wiltshire Music Connect, and all individual Associates are required to have an Enhanced DBS check with Children’s Barred List check and Wiltshire Music Connect are required to have sight of everyone’s DBS certificate. Everyone is also required to subscribe to the DBS annual Update Service, which means that we can check online for any updates at least once a year. Associate organisations need to provide evidence of their own safeguarding policies and procedures which must include appropriate DBS checks for their teaching staff / teams.
If you don’t have an Enhanced DBS certificate with Children’s Barred list we can carry out this checking for you.
Preparing for your Enhanced DBS check with Wiltshire Music Connect:
- We charge Associates £65. This is a one-off fee, made up of the Government charge of £40 and £25 Wiltshire Council and Wiltshire Music Connect admin fee.
- You will need to provide three documents to validate your name, date of birth, and address. Please check the list of approved documents here
- Email us at associates@wiltshiremusicconnect.org.uk to request your new DBS application. You will need digitised copies of each of your documents, (eg digital photo or scan which can be emailed) as well as the original copies.
- You must register for the DBS annual Update Service within 28 days of the date of issue printed on your DBS Certificate. It costs £13 per year and payable by debit or credit card direct to DBS.
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
Although it is not an Associate requirement, some Associates also have qualified teacher status. This is a legal requirement for being employed as a teacher by many schools in England.
If you hold Qualified Teacher Status we need your Teacher Reference Number (TRN). This is because we are required to run annual checks against the Teaching Registration Agency Barred from Teaching lists for anyone with QTS.
