Tim Gilvin
About
As a musician, I have a BMus in Music from the University of Birmingham (2011) and an MMus in Advanced Musical Studies from Royal Holloway (2017). I have been working professionally with young people in music-making for 8 years, and am a professional composer, pianist and singer.
I have a split career working in music education and in musical theater, where I am an award-winning composer and have had shows performed in London, Edinburgh and nationwide, and have had a song featured in a performance in the West End. There is more information about that side of my career here.
I specialise in singing leading and group music classes, across a broad range of ages, having been musical director at Amersham College (working with 16-21 year olds) and taught in primary schools both in London, North East Somerset and Wiltshire. I have also recently been working with Pound Arts with their secondary choirs programme, Wiltshire Voices. I am passionate about creative music making (as this is where the two strands of my career come together) and have been working with Friday Afternoons to help deliver their creative music CPD, “Project One Dot” to primary music leaders in the county. I teach one-to-one singing regularly at a school in Bristol.
I have also worked as a music volunteer for the charity Music Alive, providing access to music for disabled people, and am passionate about music making in marginalised communities.
What I / we help young people achieve
I place an emphasis on diverse music making, as my own professional practice includes a number of skills: improvisation, sight-reading, playing by ear in a range of genres.
I teach singing and piano lessons, but each is informed by the other.
I have worked as a music leader for over 15 companies, in London and throughout the country, and have a breadth of techniques and experience to draw from.

Endorsements
From a staff member at the University of Portsmouth, where I worked on a project as composer and MD: “My students couldn’t stop singing the songs from Gilvin and Stockbridge’s Gap Year. Beyond the tuneful, fun-to-sing score, students loved the balance between playing eccentric tour guides and bungee jump instructors, and young people whose anxieties and dreams they could relate to.”
My Training & Development
As a professional musician and composer, I am always learning new things from various collaborations, and try and feed this back in to my teaching practice.
I have attended sessions at the 2018 Wiltshire Music Connect Associates Day and 2019 Primary Conference, as well as having been trained this year as a CPD provider for Friday Afternoons.
