Dr Ralf Dorrell
As I have a music lecturing job at Bath College and several other musical projects ongoing, I am not currently taking on any other teaching. I am however very interested in any paid composition or arranging work. As a composer with a lot of experience working with and conducting ensembles of young and community musicians, I am particularly interested in any composition projects aimed at this level of musical ensemble.
I have worked in music education for over 35 years as an instrumental teacher (double bass, bass guitar and all brass instruments), secondary school class teacher and music lecturer at University and FE College level.
I also work regularly in Community Music projects (Jazz Factory and Bath Community Big Band) in the West Wilts and Bath areas. I also have 30+ years of experience of organising, planning and delivering music workshops (mostly in jazz improvisation or composition) for a wide variety of Arts organisations in the SW. (Please see my website: www.ralfdorrell.com for further details).
I studied for a music degree at Sheffield University, followed by a PGCE teaching qualification. I also have a masters degree in composition and have recently completed a PhD (also in composition), both awarded by Bath Spa University.
What I / we help young people achieve
I have a long track record of improving the musical skills, of both individuals and groups, in the Wiltshire and Bath area, in a organised and structured way, whilst maintaining a fun and relaxed atmosphere.
On several occasions I have taught the children of people that I originally taught when they were children, at the start of my career.
