About

Laura Barker is a professional musician and very experienced Music teacher based in the Marlborough area.  She offers a wide range of music tuition covering Saxophone, Clarinet, Flute, Piano, Singing, Music Aural, Theory, Composition, GCSE and A-Level.

She completed her BMus and MMus at The University of Southampton. She then went on to complete her PGCE in Secondary Music teaching at University of Gloucestershire, and passed this with distinction, confirming that sharing her love of music was her purpose in life.

Laura has had five years experience as a Head of Music in two contrasting secondary schools, teaching Music, Performing Arts and Music Technology. Her lessons are consistently of a high quality; her teaching was graded ‘Outstanding’ by OFSTED. Laura has also been a examiner for AQA and Edexcel GCSE Music.

At the weekends, Laura regularly performs at wedding ceremonies.

What I / we help young people achieve

Laura ensures her pupils develop into complete musicians who have a good understanding of music theory through creative performing and compositional/improvisation activities. She encourages and supports students on their musical journey, personalising the learning experience to help them reach their full potential and best access musical opportunities that become available to them now and in the future.

She recognises the importance of working towards goals in lessons to maintain momentum and give pupils the incentive to practise. She regularly enters students for Music exams ABRSM, Trinity and Rockschool. Laura also organises an annual concert for all of her pupils each year to give them the opportunity to showcase their progress and help raise self-esteem.

Laura regularly supports school concerts. She directs the School Orchestra at Great Bedwyn School, allowing pupils who represent a wide range of abilities to make music together.

Laura enjoys working with a wide range of students, offering courses in composition to mature students at Marlborough College Summer School.
