I have been working with children for the past 16 years. I have experience of teaching students piano and guitar. I can also teach singing technique and prepare children for performing (instrumental and singing). I can teach grades if required. I teach in a confidence building way, offering praise for even small steps of effort and for improvement. I also , endeavour to motivate my pupils, by means of finding what they want to achieve with their music development. I aim to pass on a love for playing/singing and to instil the habit of regular practice, even if as short a time as 10 mins per day a few days a week. This will have benefits if continued.
I teach a variety of styles, modern, jazz, classical and also enjoy teaching my pupils to write their own lyrics and music. This can be done at a basic level so all ages can participate. I encourage gradual development in my teaching methods and use a lot of praise/rewards. I have a friendly nature, and am able to put children at ease, and help them to achieve their best; hopefully overcoming shyness and helping them to become more confident; this is especially important if the child would like to use their skills in performance.
I have worked with children both in primary schools, (private and state) and teaching from my home. I still offer both services.
My educational background, is a degree in History. Grade 7 in Piano, Grade 6 in Music Theory, Grade 5 in Singing. I also am a singer, songwriter and musician and perform my songs as well as well-known mainstream songs, around the South West area. I also am involved in leading worship in churches throughout this area.
What I / we help young people achieve
I have seen pupils, grow in confidence and ability, through encouragement and patience. I am a pragmatic teacher and will find what works best with each student. I work at the student's pace and I do not rush or pressure them. I like to make lessons fun and interesting as well as tailored as much as possible to the individual. I take time to find out, what type of music the pupil enjoys. Depending on age, I may enquire what aspirations they have for the future regarding their musical development.

Working with special needs
I have worked with children with special needs, especially with retention problems.
I have a circular learning approach to this: where I teach, the pupil practices this supported at first, then independently. After this, I will re-visit this learning topic and check for retention of what has been taught. If it is forgotten , even in part , I will go over this , but in a fresh /interesting way.
