Karen Carey Music Tuition

I have a BA Hons in Music from Bath College and a PGCE from Rolle College. Plus, ABRSM exam passes in piano and flute. As importantly, I have 24 years experience with 154 exam passes. I have worked in various schools around Wiltshire but currently only work in Colerne CE Primary School.

I currently have 63 pupils on my register, ranging from 5 year olds to 30+.

What I / we help young people achieve

I am a firm believer in developing the whole child and their love for a musical instrument, and not just passing exams. I work closely with a young musician to find their avenue in and spend the time to ensure that the songs chosen etc are current and will gain their interest. I also firmly believe in giving the children opportunities to perform in public and to gain the confidence that this gives you. I arrange two music concerts over the year and these are attended by all musicians and parents watching on.

“Karen is the most flexible, positive, talented and happy person that I could possibly work with. She is amazing with the children and each individual comes out of the music room in a far more positive frame of mind than when they went in. I have never worked with a better periphatic teacher in all my time of education.”

Mark Solomon, Colerne CE Primary School, Headteacher

“Karen is a very patient teacher and her love of music comes across in her teaching. She is so keen for you to learn and new musical skill and to enjoy the process whilst you are learning. Although one may find this hard, she makes learning fun with her endless enthusiasm and knowledge.” Jill Scott, piano students

I was a student with Karen for over 5 years learning how to play piano and flute and progressing to grade 5 in both. My love for music was brought out by karen as she was such a passionate teacher. My confidence grew as she made me feel so comfortable to make mistakes and I will never forget what I learnt in the lessons I had with her.

My Training & Development

Although I first got in to music teaching by coaching children in flute and piano, I have since extended my musical expertise by learning the recorder, violin and clarinet. I am currently learning to play the saxophone, with the view to offering this as an instrument for others to learn in the future. I have also begun to teach groups or individuals in the techniques of singing.

In my youth I played regularly with the West Glamorgan Youth Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Wales playing in Festival Hall and The Royal Albert Hall.My aim is to return to orchestral playing in the future.

In becoming an Associate of Wiltshire Music my intention is to connect with the wider Musical community and to attend courses that will contribute to my own personal development.

I am attending a workshop on Mental Health and Well being in the Music Teaching Environment this month.
