Jonathan Dunn
About
Guitar player and teacher with over 20 years experience in a wide variety of styles and situations.
Having studied music at college and degrees levels, with a BTEC in Popular Music and a BA Hons in Creative Music Technology I have very deep understanding of instrument technique, composition, improvisation and music theory, along with a variety of other musical skills such as recording and production techniques and live performance.
I am teaching in a number of schools in the Wiltshire area, delivering individual and shared guitar and ukulele lessons along with First Access lessons to whole classes. I have previously taught for the BANES Music Service in the Bath area with ages ranging from 5-16, including teaching changeling students in behavioural schools. In addition to this I have also been teaching on a private basis for a number of years to a wide range of students with differing abilities. I have also worked with musicians of all levels during my employment as a recording engineer/producer.
What I / we help young people achieve
All of my lessons are geared towards the student's continual progression on the instrument, with clear targets set each term/half-term to which the student can strive towards. Continual evaluation of a student’s development helps me to tailor lessons to each student’s needs, focusing on challenging areas and also rewarding success. I also encourage the use of the student's other skills, such as literacy, numeracy and team-working skills, in conjunction with the musical skills being taught. I also support grades being taken for all appropriate students. Being a creative musician gives me a passion to encourage learning beyond the technique of playing the instrument by also allowing and inspiring the student to develop important creativity skills.
My aim as a teacher is to help my students understand the technique of an instrument but also to see that instrument as a gateway to developing wider musical understanding, such as rhythm, time-signatures, playing with others whilst importantly never forgetting that each student must find the lessons fun and enjoyable, each wanting to learn and looking forward to their lesson each week.
