Jackdaws Music Education Trust
Type Of Organisation: Venue
We specialise in large scale performance projects, and singing CPD as well as offering a music club which supports Arts Award and a summer school. The large scale projects are;
OperaPLUS (Winner best classical music education initiative 2016)- three schools (up to 120 children per performance) at a time perform alongside a professional cast in a well known opera in English translation and modern setting, in a community venue in front of large local audience. Schools are provided with teaching packs and have two workshops and a dress rehearsal with the company before the perf.
The Year of___(Winner best classical music education initiative 2017)- Some of the countries best chamber ensembles work with whole school groups and then targeted groups of players on specially created/adapted pieces in the school (min 10 pupils max 40) who then all get together to perform in a large community venue.
Song Story- a composer led project which works in SEND settings. Focuses on a particular composer and/or work for inspiration and uses their music and the groups devised music to create a performance using instruments, technology, singing and acting. SEND schools involved have a section of the story each and there are some pieces everyone is in (eg; intro/finale), performance puts them all together in a large community venue.
Singing Skills sessions- led by our experienced singing leaders. Different focuses including playground songs, behaviour management songs, becoming a singing school etc. Can be delivered as twilight session or modelled in class sessions.
Summer Production- Work with a composer-conductor/designer-artist & director for a week to create a show from scratch.
Jack’s Music Club- Weekly after school club on Friday’s at our base, which is also an Arts Award centre. Different tutors and focuses weekly and also support to take bronze/sliver arts award with two in house AA advisors.
What I / we help young people achieve
Our projects have a variety of outcomes from the tangible certificate following on from taking an Arts Award qualification to the increased self confidence and sense of well being from taking part in a large scale performance with professional musicians.
The main hallmarks of all our work are the best professional musicians in the country working alongside children and young people on a performance to their community and families. Often opening the eyes, and ears, to musical styles and composers they may not have experienced before.

Our Training & Development
Our Artistic Director is very experienced. An associate and postgraduate with distinction, and junior fellow of the Royal College of Music she went on to work in music education for many organisations including ENO, Mid Wales Opera and Garden Opera before taking up the post at Jackdaws in 2009. We have a core staff of a very experienced Development Manager, Office Manager and Digital and Project Officer as well as a pool of 60+ professional musicians of the highest standing we work with on a freelance basis annually.
We have two trained Arts Award advisors
During OperaPLUS there is a great deal of training given to the company to prepare them for workshops etc as that is part of the project aims.
Our other freelance staff are very experienced and eminent musicians in their fields who want to share their practice and develop their own working in a community setting.
