I am a very experienced musician and tutor and I believe strongly that music-making should be easily accessible and enjoyable for all.
I teach Guitar, Bass Guitar, Double Bass, Music Tech/Production and Song-writing/Composition. Lessons can be relaxed and informal or challenging and intensive to suit.
I first took classical guitar lessons aged 11 and after receiving an electric guitar for Christmas, progressed to folk, blues, rock, pop, jazz etc.
Aged 14 I began teaching friends and relatives and by 16 was gigging around North East England. When I was 20 I relocated to London with a band and have played and taught professionally ever since.
I’m a published songwriter and have extensive experience of studio recording, gigging and touring with major-label, multi-million-selling, award-winning and independent artists. I am active in composition, engineering and production and occasionally run workshops in these disciplines.
As well as performing, writing and recording I’ve worked for many years in the business of music and media. For over 10 years I’ve free-lanced in TV (mainly with BBC Music) and Film Production (on major UK and US movies) and held management roles at a large International record label.
I’ve been employed at NAMM (California) to demonstrate guitar techniques and have composed for award-winning short films and produced radio advertisements.
In 2014 I became a Director of Fuse Media Centre in Northumberland where I established music tuition and produced a regional Arts and Culture TV show encouraging participation in music and the arts.
In 2015 I was invited to join the board as a Director of Core Music CIC – an award-winning community music organisation where I tutored and developed projects and workshops facilitating musical participation for hundreds of people in the local community.
I feel lucky that my passion for music has enabled me to travel the world and meet many interesting people and artists. As a tutor I aim to inspire others to experience some of the many positive benefits that music can bring.
What I / we help young people achieve
I tailor lessons to suit individual needs and spend time getting to know the music my students love while introducing them to techniques and giving them the ability and confidence to apply them.
I can help students with Duke of Edinburgh Awards and through exams but am equally happy to work with young people who just want to experience the fun and personal achievement of learning, playing and creating the music that they love.
I highly encourage creativity and like to give students of all abilities the means to express themselves and communicate through music. I have devised and ran group workshops in building bands, recording and song-writing to foster peer-to-peer learning.
Having experience in many aspects of the music industry, I am aware that being a musician can open unexpected doors and enhance personal development, self-confidence and self-discipline. I'm committed to making music participation accessible to all.
One of my many happy teaching achievements is that an initially under-confident guitar student of mine went on to perform at the Royal Albert Hall supporting Robert Plant of Led Zep on tour. And she rocked it!

“Your patience and positivity has really supported __ in her self confidence more than you will know. She has experienced some pretty horrible reactions from her high school teachers because of her slowness. I never thought she’d really get anywhere with guitar as shes given up on all other hobbies i think cos she felt she just couldn’t do it. Shes stuck with Guitar because of your skill and patience as a teacher. Thank you Dan we will miss you. Hope you like the florentines (my personal favourite) GOOD LUCK 🍀🥂🎸 ”
