FAQ’s

What is Wiltshire Music Connect?

Wiltshire Music Connect oversees Children & Young people’s Music Education in Wiltshire (Southwest England). We are part of Wiltshire Council, and we lead the Music Education Hub for the county.

What is your Associate Scheme?

Unlike some other Music Hubs or Music Services, Wiltshire Music Connect doesn’t employ any music leaders or tutors.  Instead, in Wiltshire there is a large pool of freelance music professionals who provide music education opportunities for schools and children & young people.

Our Associate scheme provides a level of quality assurance.  Schools and parents / carers know that anyone listed in our Associate directory has been ‘approved’ by us and has met some minimum requirements in terms of safeguarding and in terms of their music education skills, knowledge and experience.

Any individual or organisation working to support music education and opportunities for children and young people in Wiltshire can apply to become an Associate and it does not cost anything to join.

Why have you advertised for new Associates?

We would like to further diversify our Associate pool by including more professional music leaders and tutors who identify as being disabled, neurodiverse, gender-diverse, and from diverse cultural communities.

Why would I want apply?  What are the benefits?

Being part of our Associate scheme means you can be listed in our free, searchable directory, making it easier for schools and parents / carers to find out about you.  You will also have access to our bespoke app which lists work opportunities in the area. Other benefits include:

  • Access to funding to support the cost of tuition for disadvantaged learners that you teach
  • Access to our instrument hire scheme for you and your students
  • Funding opportunities and bursaries for you and your work
  • Opportunities to network and share practice with other music professionals working in Wiltshire
  • Training and CPD

Perhaps most importantly, Associates are valued members of our music hub, and help to shape the future of music making in Wiltshire.

Do I have to be based in Wiltshire?

No. Many of our Associates are not based in Wiltshire.  But you will need to be willing and able to travel to Wiltshire for work, or to deliver your work remotely / online.

What kind of work do Associates do?

Associates do all kinds of work including:

  • Peripatetic tuition in schools and communities across Wiltshire
  • Leading participatory music projects, events, activities
  • Leading clubs, groups or ensembles
  • Both in person and remote
  • Regular, year-round or one-off or occasional/special events

Does being an Associate guarantee me any paid work?

No.  Associates are freelancers who choose what work they take on.  We don’t offer any guaranteed work to any of our Associates.  But we do support Associates in finding work in Wiltshire through our Directory, our work app, and through our bulletins and networking opportunities.

How do people become an Associates?

All Associates (both individuals and organisations) are engaged in a quality assurance process which includes for example, an interview and completion of Safeguarding and Child Protection Training as well as Enhanced DBS checks and references.  Once accepted on the scheme, Associates sign up to the terms and conditions of membership.

What help is Wiltshire Music Connect offering?

If you are interested in becoming an Associate but feel you need some support before starting the application process then we can help with training, mentoring and bursaries.  Request an informal chat and we will help you work out the most appropriate kind of support for you.

We’re working hard to diversify our offer and make our comms as accessible as possible.  But if we’ve got it wrong, or if you need us to do anything else to make the information on this page more accessible please let us know.
