Progression

As we recognise a broad definition of Music Education and a range of different musical styles and genres we must also recognise that progression will manifest itself in a number of different ways.

  • Vertical progression – is about getting better at something including (but not exclusively) playing an instrument – this is not solely reflected in the achievement of grades and exams
  • Horizontal progression is about moving from one musical experience into trying another (e.g. Guitar lessons into song writing)
  • A young person may wish to try a number of different musical experiences before choosing to progress vertically.
  • Where young people progress from music activity into other things and their musical experiences have played a part in that progression we think that should be recognised and valued.
  • We also need to create and support a culture in which onward referral and signposting of learners / pupils between providers is recognised and valued.
  • If inclusion is to be successful in Wiltshire’s Music Education Hub then we also need to consider and anticipate new ways to support the progression of young people’s musical skills and interests and not assume they will choose the same ‘routes’ as others.
